One of the AFL's biggest free-agency dominoes has fallen: GWS have confirmed Toby Greene is leaving the club after 15 seasons, with the intention of joining Geelong for the 2027 season. As the ABC reports, the Giants announced Greene's decision in a brief statement on Thursday morning, citing his intention to return to his home state of Victoria.
"The Giants have been advised by Toby Greene of his intention to move back to Victoria for family reasons with a view to joining the Geelong Football Club," the club's statement read. Chief executive Dave Matthews told SEN radio the skipper leaves with the club's blessing. "That's the decision he has made and we certainly respect that," he said. "He's been a celebrated figure at our club, a very important person and I know this has been a really tough decision, one he's largely made for family reasons."
The 32-year-old has been offered what the ABC describes as a lucrative three-year deal, and can join the Cats as an unrestricted free agent once the free agency period opens on 2 October. Geelong's excitement is undisguised. "We are really excited Toby wants to join the Geelong Football Club," football boss Andrew Mackie said. "We know this was a significant decision for Toby and his family, and we recognise what the Giants have meant to him and respect the contribution he has made to their club. We are looking forward to helping Toby write the next chapter of his career at the Cats."
Greene himself flagged the thinking last week. "With Geelong, I've had an open discussion," he said. "Told them what I think about and what I wrestle with and they then explained what it would look like for me. Geelong would be a lot less travel and more time for family. They discussed aspects of the role and how it would look in the team."
His Giants résumé reads like the franchise's own biography: a foundation player who debuted in 2012, he kicked 450 goals across 282 senior matches, won the club's best and fairest twice, earned All-Australian honours three times, and was named co-captain in 2022 before taking the job solo the following season.
For South Australian fans, the move completes a bruising week of free-agency traffic heading one way — east. It comes days after Port Adelaide's three-time best and fairest winner Zak Butters chose the Western Bulldogs — not Geelong — as his preferred destination on his way out of Alberton. Two franchise cornerstones, two Victorian moves, and an October free-agency window that suddenly has everyone's attention.
